Why should websites be linked?

One important aspect of a web presence is the popularity of its incoming links, i.e. the number of times other websites refer to it.

The higher the number of incoming links to a website, the greater its link popularity. Every search engine registers the number of incoming links to a website and uses the obtained count to define a quality attribute. Google calls this quality attribute the "page rank". The higher a website's page rank, the higher up the hit list the website is placed by search engines. For this reason, incoming links have become an indispensable asset for every website.

Visitors at a website might have been led there not just by search engines but also by links set on partner sites. As the link popularity rises, so therefore does the number of visitors led to the website via the links.
